Within natural sciences are two main branches; physical science and life science. Within physical science are categories such as chemistry, earth science, physics, and space science. 

Each of them deals with areas that don’t include the inner workings of life, whereas life science focuses on biology and what makes up life. In the study of each of these fields, formal sciences such as mathematics and logic are valuable tools for describing and explaining what we see in physical sciences.

It can even be thought of as a middle ground between humanities and natural sciences. 

Humanities deals with the subjects that can be very subjective and abstract in nature, such as philosophy, religion, and arts. Social sciences focuses more on areas that can be studied empirically, such as anthropology, archaeology, economics, and political sciences

In overlapping areas such as history, linguistics, and law, the two areas of study merely take different approaches.
